“An endlessly watchable performer… a charismatic actress who suggests lots with her expressive eyes and gritty, world-weary voice.”

As a writer and director , Banafsheh reimagines classical Persian literature through a contemporary lens. Her work is known for honoring tradition while offering fresh perspectives and emotional resonance. From podcast storytelling to theatrical adaptations, her work bridges generations and cultures — most notably in From Lust to Loyalty, her comedic and poetic take on Khosrow and Shirin.

English” is a deeply moving and clever play about identity, migration, and the power of language. Set in an English class in Iran, it follows five students with different goals, including Roya, played by Banafsheh Taherian, who wants to join her son in Canada.
Her performance is heartfelt and memorable.
The play captures the struggles, humor, and emotion behind learning a new language and features a stellar Iranian-Canadian cast.

Swim Team” is a powerful metaphor for restriction and resilience.
Set in an imaginary pool in post-revolution Iran, it follows Coach Roya (Banafsheh Taherian) and her young female athletes as they secretly train.
Taherian delivers a subtle yet gripping performance, praised for her expressive presence.
Visually poetic and emotionally restrained, the play balances symbolism with quiet strength.

English” is a witty and heartfelt look at language, identity, and belonging.
Set in an ESL class in Iran, the play explores how our ability or inability to speak a language shapes how we express our inner selves.
Banafsheh Taherian, as Roya, delivers a quiet yet deeply emotional performance as a mother trying to reconnect with her son abroad.
With gentle direction and smart comedic details, the play balances humor and heartbreak in a way that feels natural, honest, and profoundly human.
